Hannu Koivula

One of the most gifted of the generation of younger Finnish conductors, Hannu Koivula was born in 1960. He is currently principal conductor of the Gävleborg Symphony Orchestra in Sweden and in 1996 he became principal conductor of the Danish Radio Sinfonietta. He attended the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki, where he studied trumpet and conducting and was a member of the conducting class of Professor Jorma Panula. After gaining first class diplomas in both trumpet and con- ducting, he attended conducting master classes with Gennady Roÿzhdestvensky in Siena. He subsequently won first prize at the Nordic Conducting Competition in Stockholm in 1990. Hannu Koivula has appeared with most of the major Scandinavian orchestras, and he also has a growing reputation in the opera houses, con-ducting at the Finnish National Opera in Helsinki, Göteborgs Opera, Norske Opera in Oslo and Norrlandsoperan in Umeå, Sweden.
