Christian Eggen

According to the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet the Norwegian conductor Christian Eggen is “the finest conductor in Scandinavia in contemporary music”. He trained both as a pianist and conductor and has studied in Oslo, Salzburg, Vienna, Paris and New York. In 1988 he became conductor of the Cikada ensemble, and since 1994 he has been artistic director of the Oslo Sinfonietta. His in-depth knowledge of modern music has made him a much sought-after conductor for ensembles and orchestras all over the world. He has worked with composers like Iannis Xenakis, John Cage, Tan Dun and György Kurtág, and has recorded a long succession of CDs with among others the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in London – his most recent release as a pianist was Carl Nielsen’s piano works. Christian Eggen composes too, and besides chamber and orchestral works he has written music for electroacoustic installations. He has received a number of awards, including a grant from the Léonie Sonning Music Foundation in 1985.
