Minimalism, Baroque and Romanticism in collage on new CD by Martin Lohse
Danish composer Martin Lohse writes music that draws on both Baroque music and American Minimalism. Three of his works are now released on CD with pianist David Lau Magnussen in front, accompanied by the Danish Chamber Players and an exclusive team of instrumentalists. On Saturday March 24 the release is celebrated with a concert.
Music historical meetings
Danish composer Martin Lohse (b. 1971) writes contemporary music, drawing on music history. The CD Collage de temps by Martin Lohse is a collage of times. Both musical ‘times’ – tempi that are put together with other tempi – and a mixture of times and idioms from musical history, from the dance suites of the Baroque through the elegance of the Rococo and the emotional outbursts of Romanticism to the rhythmic swing and motif repetitions of Minimalism.
All three works on the album are written with the featured artists in mind, fronted by the pianist David Lau Magnussen accompanied by the Danish Chamber Players (Ensemble Storstrøm) and the accordionists Bjarke Mogensen and Claudio Jacomucci, violinist Christina Åstrand and cellist Toke Møldrup.
Acoustic mobiles
Martin Lohse works with a composition technique, which he calls ‘mobile’, in which independent figures – mobiles – constantly show new sides of themselves, but are still easily recognized. We hear ‘the same’, but we have been changed by the time that has passed, so the music is not identical either to what we heard before.
Release concert
The album Collage de temps is released in Denmark on March 24 at a release concert, featuring a selection of the works from the album, performed by pianist David Lau Magnussen and others. The release is also the debut for a new ensemble, the Lohse Esnsemble, consisting of Lau Magnussen as well as Karen Johanne Pedersen, violin, Jákup Højgaard Lützen, viola and Kirstine Elise Pedersen, cello, which is dedicated to and specialized in Martin Lohse's music.
