Riga String Quartet

ensemble
The Riga String Quartet was formed in 1983 by graduates from the Latvian Academy of Music who had developed their professional skills at the academies in Moscow and St. Petersburg with such excellent teachers as Boris Gutnikov, Valentin Berlinsky and Lev Jevgrafov. With the prize they won at the international string quartet competition Prague Spring followed widespread recognition and offers of concerts abroad. The members of the quartet are Uldis Viesturs Sprudzs, 1st violin; Juris Savkins, 2nd violin; Einars Rozevics, viola; and Agne Stepina, cello. The quartet gives regular concerts in Germany, Belgium and Holland. It has also played in France, Finland, Sweden, Poland, the USA and Canada. World famous festivals like the Ashland Music Festival in the USA, the Victoria Music Festival in Canada and the Kaustinen Music Week in Finland have been visited by the Riga String Quartet. A CD of music by the German composer Dietrich Erdmann, a pupil of Hindemith and Knorr, is the most striking of the quartet’s musical productions which it has recorded all over the world. Its repertoire ranges from classical quartets by Haydn, Mozart and Boccherini to modern works from recent years.
