Pia Hansen was trained at the Carl Nielsen Academy of Music in Odense with Ulrik Cold and Lars Waage. She then continued her studies at the Royal Danish Academy of Music with Ingrid Bjoner and Kirsten Buhl Møller, making her debut in 1992. Travelling scholarships from the Odd Fellow lodges enabled her to spend several periods of study in New York with the outstanding teacher Oren Brown. She has sung in the Danish National Radio Choir and is now permanently engaged by the Chorus of the Royal Opera. She is frequently used as a soloist by the Danish regional orchestras and among other things sang Das Lied von der Erde with the Randers City Orchestra in 1995 with great success and most recently, with the Odense Symphony Orchestra, has performed extracts from Ligeti’s opera La Grand Macabre. Pia Hansen has had many engagements as an oratorio singer both in Denmark and abroad, most recently at Porrentruy in Switzerland in a very successful Baroque performance where she sang the contralto part in the St. Matthew Passion. Other engagements have been Lieder concerts in Beijing, London and Nigeria. Pia Hansen has performed on a recording of Mozart’s The Magic Flute for Decca and in Mozart’s Six Nocturnes for 3 singers and 3 basset horns.
