Antra Bigaca

Antra Bigaca (mezzo-soprano) began playing violin as a child, but later trained as a singer. In 1983-89 she studied with Ludmila Brauna at the Latvian Academy of Music. In 1994-95 she also studied with Katja Angeloni. Since 1989 Antra Bigaca has been with the Latvian Opera as a soloist. Her most important roles have been the title role in Carmen, Judith in Bartók’s Duke Bluebeard’s Castle, Adalgisa in Bellini’s Norma and Fenena in Verdi’s Nabucco. She has also been a soloist in masses and cantatas by Mozart, Bach, Pergolesi, Dvorak and other composers, and has worked with the conductors Paul Magi, Vladimir Spivakov, Gilbert E. Kaplan, Kery-Lynn Wilson and others. As a lieder singer she has performed Schumann, Schubert, Wolf and Medtner as well as older and more recent Latvian composers. Antra Bigaca has given concerts in many European countries and in America. In 1989 and 1992 she was a prizewinner in the Jazeps Medinš singers’ competition, and in 1995 she won the annual Music Prize of the Latvian Ministry of Culture.
