Last Saturday, listeners to Danish Radio P2 could hear the winner of the P2 Music Award 2020 be announced. On 8 February, the prizewinners will be celebrated at a concert in DR Koncerthuset.

Four Dacapo releases among those shortlisted

Nordic String Quartet’s recording of the string quartets by Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen (1932-2016) was awarded the prize in the Album of the Year, New Classical category. The album presents Gudmundsen-Holmgreen’s first six string quartets, and is the first in the series of the collected string quartets by the Danish composer, which number 14 all told.

The jury wrote about the album: “Music by a highly productive composer who deserves to be even better known. Here there is lots of humour and absurd comedy, and the Nordic String Quartet manages to release it in so organic a fashion that its necessity becomes clearly visible.”

Three other Dacapo releases were also among those shortlisted. In the Classical Album of the Year category there was a second recording featuring Nordic String Quartet that was nominated, the release of Nancy Dalberg’s collected string quartets. In the Album of the Year, New Classical category were two other shortlisted releases from Dacapo: Concerto Copenhagen’s recording of Karl Aage Rasmussen’s recomposition of Vivaldi’s iconic The Four Seasons and the recording by the viola player from Odense Symfoniorkester, Rafaell Altino, of six new works by six Danish composers.

Concert and prizewinning ceremony on radio and TV

The prizes will be awarded at a large concert to be held on 8 February at 19.30 in the DR Koncerthuset. This concert will be directly broadcast on P2, and it can also be seen on DR2 on Sunday, 9 February at 19.00. A number of the prizewinners will be taking part in the concert, including the Nordic String Quartet.

The prize for Album of the Year, New Classical and the P2 Listeners’ Prize went to Den Danske Strygekvartet’s (the Danish String Quartet) album Prism II, with string quartets by Bach, Schnittke and Beethoven. In the International Album of the Year category, the winner was Lise Davidsen – music by Wagner and Richards Strauss. The young Norwegian soprano is here accompanied by Philharmonia Orkestret.

Dacapo sends its warmest congratulations to all the winners!
