August Enna (1859-1939) was Denmark’s most famous composer of operas on the international scene in the 1890s. The opera Kleopatra was performed at various international venues as well as at The Royal Theatre in Copenhagen, but since then both Kleopatra and August Enna’s other works have been more or less forgotten in a Danish musical life in which the late-Romantic style no longer produced any sympathetic response.

In the video below you can hear author and opera expert Henrik Engelbrecht introduce Kleopatra, which has been recorded for the first time by the Danish National Opera and Odense Symphony Orchestra and was recently released on Dacapo. The video is in Danish.
