New release collects two concertante works by Allan Gravgaard Madsen and Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen
On Friday 13 December the album Nachtmusik · For Violin and Orchestra is released. The recording presents two concertante works from one of Denmark’s most iconic composers, Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen, and one of its freshest new voices, Allan Gravgaard Madsen.
Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen (1932-2016) was one of the most striking composers from northern Europe over the past half century. With his fearlessness, individuality and meticulous craftsmanship, he inspired a generation of composers in Denmark.
One of them was Allan Gravgaard Madsen (b. 1984), whose double concerto Nachtmusik is released on Friday 13 December on a new recording, together with Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen's concerto For Violin and Orchestra – both recorded by the Danish National Symphony Orchestra and conductors Ryan Bancroft (Nachtmusik) and Nicholas Collon (For Violin and Orchestra).
Great reviews and award to Nachtmusik
Allan Gravgaard Madsen’s music is concentrated, subdued and poetical and is at times haunted by ghosts from the Romantic period. His tactile works feed on the musical tension between stasis and energy.
Madsen's Nachtmusik received great reviews after it's first performance in September, and was described by the Danish newspaper Politiken as "a deeply original work". Nachtmusik was also recently awarded a prize by the Danish Arts Foundation, as one of nine pieces named as Best music of the year in 2019.
Two works dedicated to its soloists
Nachtmusik has as its point of departure a microscopic examination of a single note, out of which it blossoms, whereas For Violin and Orchestra ventures into the jungle in classic Gudmundsen-Holmgreen style, leading us to consider our place in a world full of noises.
Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen composed For Violin and Orchestra to the Danish violinist and concertmaster of Danish National Symphony Orchestra, Christina Åstrand. Allan Gravgaard Madsen's Nachtmusik is likewise written for Åstrand, who is soloist on the recording of both concertos, and to her duo partner, pianist Per Salo.
Release event and conversation with the artists
The release is celebrated at an event on 10 December at 17.00 at Apollo Bar in Copenhagen. Everyone interested is invited to a conversation salon with violinist Christina Åstrand, pianist Per Salo, composer Allan Gravgaard Madsen and journalist Celine Haastrup, who will be discussing the work with the two concertos on the recording (in Danish).
Afterwards Dacapo, Edition·S and Edition Wilhelm Hansen invite for a refreshment and the new album can be purchased at a special price.
