The new recording of Rued Langgaard's spectacular Symphony No. 1, Cliffside Pastorals with the Berliner Philharmoniker and conductor Sakari Oramo has just been announced as one of the nominees for the Gramophone Awards 2023 in the category 'Orchestral'.

"The Berlin Philharmonic premiered this work back in 1913; under Oramo, they bring immense understanding and instinct to it today", wrote Gramophone in the review of the symphony, which was rejected as unplayable in both Copenhagen and Stockholm. Only the Berliner Philharmoniker understood what a masterpiece the teenage Langgaard had created.

Gramophone also wrote: "The thematic unity is remarkable enough – there's not a stretch of 10 bars in which you don't hear one of the work's central motifs iterated somehow. [...] They [Berliner Philharmoniker] can handle Langgaard's tendency to bellow "bigger, louider" in the outer movements and do so with swagger".

The Gramophone Awards will take place in London on 4 October 2023.

Dacapo Records wishes congratulations to everyone involved!
