Do you know Else Marie Pade?

In collaboration with Edition·S and Dacapo, The Lake Radio has produced a new podcast miniseries, that retells the story of Danish composer Else Marie Pade. The podcast series is out now.

New release
21 September 2020

A new podcast miniseries retells the story of the Danish composer Else Marie Pade (1924-2016), punctures media myths, presents new material and tries to get to know her more thoroughly – as a multifaceted artist, as a person, and as a single mother and woman in Denmark in the 1950’s.

The podcast is produced by The Lake Radio and launched in collaboration with Dacapo Records and Edition·S. Through interviews, material, and music from the archives, the story of Else Marie Pade is (re)told in 8 episodes.

Listen to the podcast series here.

Eight podcast episodes with new perspectives

Each of the eight episodes has different themes and offers new perspectives on the Danish composer, who is especially known as an electronic pioneer, but whose archive contains much more than that.

The podcast and interviews are in Danish, but episodes 4–8 consist mainly of music.

Episode #1 Stories we know
This podcast miniseries retells the story of the Danish composer Else Marie Pade, punctures media myths, presents new material, and tries to get to know her more thoroughly – as a multifaceted artist, as a person, and as a single mother and woman in Denmark in the 1950’s.

Episode #2 Myths about Else Marie Pade
The well-known stories about Else Marie Pade often claim that she was completely unknown and unappreciated in her own time. However a closer look at the archives and cultural landscape of the 1950’s – when electronic music was new to Denmark – brings nuance to this story.

Episode #3 Stories to write
The listener is invited deep into the archive with stories of previously unknown works. How do you digitise a lifelong oeuvre and what does it take for a composer to be passed on to future generations?

Episode #4 Musik til Jydsk Telefon (1965)
“Musik til Jydsk Telefon” is the label on one of the many tape reels in the archive. This is a piece of electronic music that Else Marie Pade made for a documentary movie about the phone company Jydsk Telefon with the title “Of My Life and My Time”.

Episode #5 Drømme-Jørgen (1981)
A radio drama/sound fairytale to a text by Leander with music for flute and prepared piano by Else Marie Pade, read by Ib Spang Olsen and performed by Eyvind Rafn and Else Marie Pade.

Episode #6 Symphonie Heroica (1960)
A radio drama painting a picture of post-war Europe.

Episode #7 Næsehornsfuglen
Music performed on various toy instruments – not much else is known.

Episode #8 Immortella (1970 revised 1984)
Music for a ballet d'action in three parts for 20 percussion instruments and zither – electronically processed.
