Allan Gravgaard Madsen’s ‘Nachtmusik’ shortlisted for the Carl Prize
Carl Prisen (The Carl Prize) has just published its short list for this year’s prize. In the category Classical Composer of the Year – Large Ensemble it includes Allan Gravgaard Madsen for his work Nachtmusik, which was released on Dacapo last year.
The annual Carl Prize was established by the Danish Music Publishers’ Association, the wish being to pay tribute to and praise Danish songwriters and composers. The prize has been named after Denmark’s great composer Carl Nielsen, but it is awarded within both rhythmical and classical music.
A total of 14 Carl Prizes have been awarded, and in the category CLASSICAL COMPOSER OF THE YEAR – Large Ensemble Allan Gravgaard Madsen (b. 1984) has this year been shortlisted with the orchestral work Nachtmusik (2019).
The work was commissioned by The Danish National Symphony Orchestra and given its first performance by Duo Åstrand/Salo, made up of the violinist Christina Åstrand and the pianist Per Salo, and The Danish National Symphony Orchestra, conducted by the American Ryan Bancroft on 17 September 2019 in DR Koncertsalen. In connection with the first performance the work was recorded, and in December 2019 it appeared on an album along with a recording of Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen’s For Violin and Orchestra.
This year’s winner of the Carl Prize will be revealed at a prize ceremony on 24 August 2020.
