Vagn Holmboe, composer

About:
Vagn Holmboe (1909-96) was the most influential Danish composer of the generation after Carl Nielsen. With his teaching and his many works from a composing career of over sixty years, Holmboe had a great influence on Danish music and Nordic music in general. His music is luminously clear and precise, striking in its lines and rhythms. Over the years Holmboe was
greatly preoccupied with the folk music principle of going straight to the core of the music. He combined this with his own symphonic turn of mind, with roots as far back as Haydn.

Fanfare, The Want List 2002

The whole is controlled extremely successfully by Michael Schønwandt who has been making a very high reputation for himself over the past five or so years in both this type of repertoire as well as the mainstream catalogue (Classical Music on the Web)

Holmboes Nietzsche-requiem er et storværk (Berlingske Tidende)

Under the baton of Michael Schønwandt, the Danish National Symphony and Choir sound startling, present, and on top of things, drawing all the necessary fire from the pooled resources. Baritone Johan Rueter is cunning in his many solo parts, mixing a forthright dark Wagnerian sound with the subtlety and capriciousness of lighter fare, and the sonics are splendid. A real find
10/10 (ClassicsToday)

Schønwandts nyindspilning er værket værdigt: stærk, dynamisk og klar (Politiken)
