C.E.F. Weyse

Piano Sonatas

Thomas Trondhjem, piano

Christoph Ernst Friedrich Weyse, composer

About:
C.E.F. Weyse (1774-1842) was one of the most important figures in Danish musical life in the transition to Romantism around 1800. He is best known today for his songs; but his other works also include seven symphonies, several operas, cantatas and a large number of piano works. The last four of a total of eight piano sonatas are recorded here for the first time. The music is inspired by C.P.E. Bach, Haydn, Clementi and Mozart, but at the same time exhibits many personal features such as singable themes that makes Weyse the unsurpassed master of the genre in the period.

Reviews

DANISH MUSIC AWARD 2002

Thomas Trondhjem brings the music to brilliant life, decorating intelligently when required and neatly finding the middle ground between stylized formality and spring-lamb playfulness. Good sound. Warmly recommended.
International Record Review

Thomas Trondhjems geschmackvoller, sensibel weich konturierter Vortrag lässt kaum Wünsche offen.
Klassik Heute

Trondhjem's playing seems tinglingly alive to all nuances ... These works are beautifully crafted, and some of the most sheerly pleasurable listening around - go on, spoil yourself!
(Classical Music Web)
