About:
The classic wind quintet of the 1800s was ousted by the large forms of Romanticism, but saw a well deserved renaissance in the twentieth century. In Denmark it was not least Carl Nielsen's ground-breaking work that stimulated the renewed interest. On this CD Nielsen's quintet is featured alongside a number of fine works for the ensemble type. Otto Mortensen's and Jørgen Jersild's highly personal quintets both bear traces of the composers' time in France, while Henning Wellejus' entertaining work confirms the divertimento-like character of the genre.

BBC RADIO 3 CD REVIEW 'Building a Library' collection

Danish music, Danish musicians, great sound (I mean, really good), and a wonderful sense of ensemble (American Record Guide)

This disc is particularly successful. The players of the Danish Radio Symphony Orchestra have a special understanding of Nielsen's musical language, as well they should. And in this performance it shows. There is both style and stature, while the excellent recording captures the many subtleties of texture which add so much to the enjoyment of the music. Tempi and phrasing could hardly be better judged." ***** (Classical Music on the Web) [Read full review]

In fact all these performances are strongly profiled and carefully prepared … the Nielsen and Jersild are highly recommendable and well
recorded
