Niels Rosing-Schow: Alliages

12 January 2015  David's Review Corner
David Denton

Niels Rosing-Schow is one of the best known among the experimental Danish composers, this new disc gathering together his most recent chamber music. Though much has been written regarding his French influences following his studies there with Iannis Xenakis, to the innocent ear we hear a very individual composer, who prefers to live in a modern world where traditional harmonies still exist. Those mixed influences are ever apparent in Lines for solo guitar, and even more so in Alliage I, where the alto saxophone is in the world of the Orient with its erotic hypnotic quality against the static modern world of music created by the accordion. Composed for a flute competition…aus atmen…is a virtuoso showpiece that explores every facet of the instrument in a way that will fascinate the audience. The human voice also plays a part in the disc, the melody for Nanu coming from Greenland with the mezzo vocalising against a saxophone accompaniment. Helene Gjerris is heard to better effect in the Three Simple Songs, each one very short and written in a purely tonal style with guitar accompaniment. Going back to 1991, Ritus I is a virtuoso showpiece for flute and tuned percussion that goes through the instrument’s familiar sounds to produce a score of considerable charm. The disc is performed by artists chosen by the composer. Very good sound quality.
