Buxtehude and his Circle

16 May 2016  Review Corner

Dietrich Buxtehude was the greatest organ virtuoso of his time and a celebrated composer of both sacred and secular baroque music. He was so good and so famed that in 1705, JS Bach, then a young shaver of 20, walked from Arnstadt to Lübeck - where Buxtehude was organist - a distance of more than 250 miles, to meet the great man and hear him play. GF Händel was another caller.
An early user of modern business practices, Buxtehude was good at networking and thus the premise of this CD, it’s Buxtehude (who contributes two pieces) and the composers with whom he mixed.

As a CD it’s excellent, the music being calming and spiritual. After a hard day, we guarantee it will clean your head of the day’s stresses and strains and leave you feeling at least a little more relaxed. It should be available on the NHS.

Conductor and baritone Paul Hillier leads his Theatre of Voices, which specialises in early music, accompanied by violin, viola, bassoon and, of course, organ.
Kaspar Forster, Franz Tunder,Nicolaus Bruhns and Christian Geist are the other composers featured. Fans of the human voice, the baroque and sacred or early music should all consider this.
