Langgaard composed a total of eight string quartets during the period 1914-25, four of these in 1918-19. With the exception of two fairly short single movements for string quartet from app. 1950 he never since returned to this genre. This recording encompasses all the Langgaard quartets in their final versions with two exceptions: No. 1, which in various ways is reused in No. 4 and 5, and a quartet in A-flat major never previously performed (1918).
