The Nightingale String Quartet's new recording of Rued Langgaard works tops the bill in the world's two leading music periodicals and on the USA's biggest radio station
The young Nightingale String Quartet CD recording of the Danish composer Rued Langgaard's string quartets for Dacapo Records is featured as pick of the month in the world's two leading periodicals for classical music, and at the same time a similar breakthrough is in the pipeline on the USA's biggest radio channel for classical music.
Distinctions in the world's leading music periodicals
The highly respected British periodical Gramophone was first, with the distinction Gramophone Choice. In the June issue of the magazine, the reviewer David Fanning notes that the four young women of the quartet "throws itself into the music with vehemence and a sense of purpose". The BBC publication BBC Music Magazine, which recently announced the Nightingale String Quartet's CD as the month's Chamber Choice, notes the young musicians' special understanding of the eccentric Rued Langgaard's music - "the provocative vitality, the fragile romantic sensitivity and the striking intellectual independence.
Album of the Week on the USA's biggest classical radio station
This week it is the USA's biggest classical FM radio station, the New York-based WQXR, that turns the spotlight on the Nightingale String Quartet and Rued Langgaard. The radio station, which is owned by The New York Times, has picked out the quartet's Langgaard CD as Album of the Week, which means a week of massive exposure of the Danish CD recording for the many classical listeners in New York and the surrounding area.
"It's really fantastic to know that the distinctive, dramatic music that Rued Langgaard wrote almost a hundred years ago, and about which we are so fervent in the Nightingale String Quartet, will now get out to so many people!" says the violinist Gunvor Sihm from the Nightingale String Quartet. "If only Langgaard could have known! Well, now we know it when we go into the studio this summer to record the next release in the series - and of course this means an extra kick!"
The next CD in the Nightingale String Quartet's series of Rued Langgaard's collected string quartets is expected to appear in the Spring of 2013.
"The performances here are marvelous...The Nightingale String Quartet relishes every bizarre nuance."
