The Kronos Quartet have changed their European tour plans to give a special memorial and CD release concert at the Copenhagen Opera on 9 July, together with Theatre of Voices and Paul Hillier
On the 9th of July 2016, the vocal group Theatre of Voices and British conductor Paul Hillier will be joined by the world famous Kronos Quartet to honour the “part child, part madcap inventor, part jungle adventurer” (The Guardian), Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen, who passed away on 27 June. This international team of Grammy Award winning artists will be presenting a new album, Green Ground, and an exclusive concert programme of music by the Danish composer at the Copenhagen Opera.
The collaboration between the Kronos Quartet and Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen goes back to 1984, when the American quartet commissioned the first work (String Quartet No. 7, Parted) by the Danish composer. Likewise, Theatre of Voices and Paul Hillier have performed Holmgreen’s bespoke compositions for several years. Now, the two ensembles pay tribute to Pelle Gudmundsen-Holmgreen by performing the works Moving Still, No Ground Green, Green and New Ground Green, written exclusively for them to celebrate the composers 80th birthday in 2012, in a concert that will also mark the world premiere CD release of the same works.
All the artists involved have won Grammy awards for previous CD releases – both the Kronos Quartet, Theatre of Voices and Paul Hillier. Additionally, Gudmundsen-Holmgreen himself has had a Grammy nomination for a recording of his choral music.
The Kronos Quartet’s first recording of works by Gudmundsen-Holmgreen ”Kronos plays Holmgreen” from 2008 achieved international recognition and was selected among “Albums of the year” in Time Out Chicago, who described the CD as “the most unique and hilariously raucous new music we heard all year”. International Record Review wrote of “fearless performances” and American Record Guide thought “I don’t think I’ve heard the Kronos Quartet sounding better than this.”
