The Danish String (formerly The Young Danish String) Quartet was formed in the winter of 2001 by the four young musicians Rune Sørensen, Frederik Øland (violins), Asbjørn Nørgaard (viola) and Carl-Oscar Østerlind (cello) when they were all under 18 years old. The quartet has studied at the Royal Danish Academy of Music in Copenhagen with Professor Tim Frederiksen as teacher and mentor, and has attended master classes with members of the world’s leading quartets. In 2004 the Danish String Quartet became the youngest ensemble ever to win the DR Chamber Music Competition. Subsequently the quartet won the Holmboe String Quartet Competition and the Charles Hennen International Chamber Music Competition in Holland. In addition the Danish String Quartet won the Major Jacob Gade Grant the same year. In 2005 the quartet won both First Prize and the prestigious audience prize in the Trondheim International Chamber Music Competition in Norway and was awarded the Danish Music Critics’ Artist’s Prize. In 2006 the Danish String Quartet won the DR Artist’s prize. The quartet has played with a long succession of international artists, including Radovan Vladkovic and Sir James Galway, and has attracted attention abroad with concerts in Germany, Holland, Scandinavia and the USA.
