The Greek clarinettist Spyros Mourikis had his international breakthrough in 1997 when he won the International Carl Nielsen Clarinet Competition. He was born in 1974 and trained at the conservatories of Athens and Paris, where he won First Prize in 1995. Besides being a frequently used soloist in his native country, Spyros Mourikis has played with orchestras in among other countries Germany, Denmark and France. He has also toured as a chamber musician in many parts of Europe. He is a solo clarinettist in the Athens State Orchestra and the Mahler Chamber Orchestra conducted by Claudio Abbado, and has a professorship at the Athens Conservatory.
