Fritz Berthelsen trained with Professor Thomas Friedli at the Conservatoire de Musique de Genève, where he was awarded the highest distinction in 1992, the I. Prix Virtuosité. Then followed two years of studies in Holland with Aart Rozeboom. Fritz Berthelsen has played in orchestras in Switzerland and Holland, but at the same time has been interested in experimental music, for example in electronic sound contexts and performances. He has performed with the Swiss Orchestre Contrechamps and the Danish Contemporánea Copenhagen, with which he has premiered more than 21 works in the past two years on Danish radio and toured Europe and South America. At the ICMC opening concert in Beijing in 1999 he performed three solo works for clarinet/bass clarinet and computer.
