The ensemble Contemporánea also calls itself the Interactive Art Ensemble. Its core members are five musicians, a conductor and a video artist. The ensemble collaborates with a variety of visual and theatrical artists and institutions, both nationally and internationally. The aim is to eliminate the boundaries between the respective arts. Contemporánea’s profile as an electroacoustic ensemble means that all their concerts include both acoustic and electronic sounds. The configuration is bass clarinet (clarinets), percussion, violin, double-bass and electronics/sound projection. The repertoire ranges from works with tape or simple effect-processing to extensive sound projection or interactive use of computers. Contemporánea was founded in 1997 and has played over 150 concerts, has given around 100 works by a wide variety of composers their first performances, and has released five CDs. Contemporánea has played all over the world, for example at the Norwegian contemporary music festival ULTIMA, at the two international festivals the International Computer Music Conference and the International Society for Contemporary Music (ISCM); at MAGMA, Berlin; at the Up North festival in Dublin; as well as in China, South America and the USA. The artistic director of the ensemble is Ejnar Kanding (b. 1965), who is also responsible for the ensemble’s sound projection. As a composer Kanding has specialized in music where the computer plays a central role both in the composition process and in the performance.
