Århus Sinfonietta

ensemble

Århus Sinfonietta was formed in 1990 by a group of musicians from the Aarhus Symphony Orchestra and the Jutland Ensemble in collaboration with the composer Hans Abrahamsen. The regular core of the ensemble consists of seventeen professional musicians who together represent all the instruments of the symphony orchestra. The repertoire includes works for larger ensembles as well as chamber music and works for solo instruments. Contemporary Danish music is something close to the heart of the ensemble - Århus Sinfonietta has commissioned and premiered works by a number of prominent composers including Per Nørgård, Karl Aage Rasmussen and Bent Sørensen.

But music of all ages and places finds a place in the repertoire of Århus Sinfonietta. The ensemble's concert programmes often try to show the interconnections between the art of the past and the present. Århus Sinfonietta gives concerts all over Denmark, usually headed by the ensemble's regular conductor Søren K. Hansen.

Since its foundation, Århus Sinfonietta has worked with international conductors (Elgar Howarth and Michel Tabachnik) and soloists. Since 2000 Erik Kaltoft has been the artistic director of Århus Sinfonietta.

Axel Borup-Jørgensen: Carambolage
"Axel Borup-Jorgensen’s compositions use small ensemble and voice. Winterelegie whispers and searches for its voice, both human and instrumental. Sound events are punctuated and often stand alone, but amidst the fragmentation is a thread of continuity. The distinct plots on the figurative graph form a direct line of intention. Carambolage is for percussion, electric guitar, and piano. The spaces here are more pronounced and the direct path more obscured. The listener can hear the painstaking detail that must populate the score with each exact-sounding block. The interactions between performers build singular moments rather than pyramids of tension. ‘Pocket Oratorium’ deconstructs a dark Rainer Maria Rilke poem and stretches each phoneme and syllable. Only 24 words are spoken, with no repeats, but it takes nearly 10 minutes for the broken utterances and accompanying piano, harpsichord, and percussion bursts."

Axel Borup-Jørgensen: Carambolage
4/6 Stars
