Niels Rosing-Schow: Peinture du temps - værker for Sinfonietta

26 February 2013  David's Review Corner
David Denton

The Danish composer, Niels Rosing-Schow, is continually sharpening the blade at the cutting edge of music’s modernity to bring new sonic experiences to his works. He is fascinated with the interaction of sound in its relationship to time and space, the titles of three of the works on this disc directly relating to the subject.

For those still unacquainted with his name, I should, at the outset, point to the fact that the five works are not music as you will understand it, but linked sounds to create mind pictures. Neither do I think it necessary to like all that he writes, my own reaction to I giardini dietro la Citta (The gardens behind the City), being one of pleasure and a desire to immediately replay the track. That was completed last year, while Vocabulary II reminds me of sitting through countless University concerts in the 70’s and 80’s when random and sparse sounds from instruments and voices were thought to be the brave new world. Thankfully it is now history. His three ‘time’ pieces were composed in the period 2004–6, and in instrumentation range from the haunting sounds of flute and cello in Empreintes du Temps to the impact generated by saxophone and string quartet in Peinture du Temps.

I am not going to attempt a description of these pieces, as they are something that will draw a personal response. It is played by the French-based TM+, a group dedicated to modern music, and I guess the scores presented them with quite a few problems.
